How we establish
the Top 100.
The ranking is only meaningful when its evidence remains visible. Even a verified profile is never a recommendation to set out.
Evidence status
Several independent sources converge.
No profile is limited to a single source in this edition.
100 profiles, two evidence levels.
97% verified · 3% corroborated
Score out of 100
A weighted formula, followed by editorial review.
The score never comes from the rank; the rank follows from the score and documented tie-break rules.
Protocol
Location, installation, sources and contradictions.
What makes the story defensible and non-interchangeable.
Sensory impact and the ability to justify a detour.
Excluded from the score
difficulty · social popularity · presence of a photo
No profile replaces a current route guide. Opening, season, equipment and safety must always be rechecked with the operator.
Traceability
A method that states its boundaries clearly.
- 50 coordinates are approximate areas, never starting points.
- 3,568 leads identified initially through OpenStreetMap, specialist directories and earlier research.
- 299 shortlisted experiences were evaluated: each had a name, country, category and at least one usable source.
- Why the gap? The evaluated list resulted from research rounds and shortlisting based on eligibility, documentation and anticipated editorial interest. Some candidates were rejected before scoring. We have not established that every other profile was incomplete, nor systematically evaluated every complete profile.
- 100 selected experiences make up this edition.
- Every experience is evaluated three times against the same grid to stabilise the score.
- 24/24 ranking checks passed.
What the score measures
Compare the character of an experience, not its difficulty.
Power of story
Does the place carry a precise, documentable story rather than a generic formula?
Singularity
Does the installation, terrain or context make this experience hard to replace?
Emotional and sensory intensity
Does the route promise a strong sensory experience without turning that judgement into a technical grade?
Rationale for travel
Can the experience justify a detour or structure a journey?
Strength of evidence
Do the essential facts rest on stable, recent and sufficiently independent sources?
Revisions
